Recovery Consultants provides classes and workshops to professionals and people in recovery to orient them to the role of the Recovery Specialist. Additionally, the team conducts trainings, including a certification course called "Sharing Recovery", written by Al J. Mooney, M.D., and Janet Salvio-Littlejohn, M.A. Ed. Admin.

The training course material relies on the trusted recovery literature as well as the most current research pertaining to addiction medicine and communication techniques. The training has been positively received by community members, Local Management Entities (LME) and Mental Health Agencies. Any individual, agency, or group with a desire to understand and provide quality peer services will benefit from the team's consultation and training.

Continuing what Dr. Silkworth started
In 1935 William Duncan Silkworth, M.D. stated that alcoholism is an allergy coupled with a mental obsession. Today we know it is more than that. Research has shown that addiction (to all substances, including alcohol) is a biochemical (physical), psychological, social and spiritual affliction.

The numerous "programs of recovery", especially mutual support programs like the 12-Step programs, are successful because people with "lived-experience", strength and hope, work with newcomers and those with long-term recovery to share their recovery. We know we cannot keep it unless we give it away. The Recovery Consultants team provides training and education in the area of addiction and recovery to "enhance" one’s healing and to help others find the help they need. The Recovery Consultants team does not represent 12-Step programs, yet we do recommend them. Recovery Consultants are trainers who have been mentored and supervised by Al J. Mooney, M.D., author of The Recovery Book*. With over 35 years experience, working with addicts and alcoholics, Dr. Mooney continues what Dr. Silkworth had started.
